Marion Delegate Brent Oleson Pulling for Ron Paul at 2012 Republican National Convention

The Marion libertarian and Ron Paul supporter, is an Iowa delegate to the Republican National Convention in Tampa next week.

Marion delegate Brent Oleson will be supporting Ron Paul during next week’s Republican National Convention.

Even though the Republican Linn County Supervisor acknowledgesd Paul has a slim chance of becoming the Republican nominee, he said it’s a privilege to give his support to the Texas congressman.

"It means a lot to me," he said. "It’s changed for me. I am realizing while he may not get the nomination, he has started a new movement in the Republican party."

Oleson said Paul represents a wing of the Republican party that embraces "true" fiscal conservatism and individual liberty.

"He’s raised new issues that Republicans have ignored," he said. "You can’t spend billions on wars. You have to control spending and budgeting and individual liberty. (It) means keeping government out of our private lives."

But it is possible that he'll get the chance to show his support with a vote.

In order for Paul to be considered for the roll call vote, five states have to support him.

Ron Paul has won a plurality of delegates in five states, including Iowa, according to the Huffington Post.

If Paul doesn't make it onto the roll call, Oleson said, he's more than pleased to support the presumptive nominee, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

"I’ve decided I am going to support whoever the Republicans put up," he said. "It doesn’t mean I am any less passionate about changing the administration."
