Marion Weapons Specialist Wins Eco-Friendly Design Contest Through Iowa City Retailer
Dustin Smart, a Marion native currently deployed in Afghanistan with the Air National Guard, recently won a design contest for a T-shirt sold to benefit Earth Day.
Dustin Smart won a school contest while he was tens of thousands of miles away from it.
The Marion native is currently deployed with the Air National Guard in Afghanistan as a weapons specialist, but that didn't stop him from winning a contest with the University of Iowa to design a shirt commemorating Earth Day for the Iowa City clothing store, Active Endeavors.
"It definitely helped to pass the time," says Smart in an interview with the University of Iowa News Service.
The store is selling the shirt for $19.99 to beneifit the Johnson County Heritage Trust as part of an Earth Day fundraiser.
Though he was deployed before finishing school, he has said he is planning to re-enroll as soon as he gets back from Afghanistan.
Best yet, it seems as though the design is winning the hearts of customers at Active Endeavors. Dave Nerad, store manager, said in an interview with KCRG that it's doing quite well.
"It’s been a hot seller already," he said.
