Marion's Swamp Fox Festival Accepting Golf, 5K and Parade Registrations

The annual celebration of Marion's heritage will take place Sept. 6-7, 2013. A number of family-friendly events are scheduled, including a live music, a golf tournament, craft show, 5K run/walk, family breakfast, community parade and fireworks.

The theme for this year’s festival is Blue Acres: Marion…It’s the Place to Be, which celebrates Marion’s designation as a Blue Zones Project™ demonstration site beginning in 2014 and a new exhibit coming to the Marion Heritage Center featuring the agricultural roots of the region.

Registration forms are currently available for those wishing to participate in the golf tournament, 5K Run/Walk, or parade.

Golf Tournament

The four person best shot golf tournament returns to the festival this year thanks to the sponsorship support of University of Iowa Community Credit Union and Michelle Havener, State Farm Insurance Agency. Teams of family members, friends or co-workers are invited to enjoy a fun, fall afternoon of golf on Friday, Sept. 6 at Hunter’s Ridge Golf Course starting at 2:00 p.m.Registration is only $45 per person and prizes will be rewarded. A $10,000 cash prize is offered for a hole-in-one on hole #4, sponsored by Sheets, Forrest, Draper Insurance Agency. Register by calling 319-377-4846 before Sept. 3.

5K Run/Walk

The Cedar Valley Running Association organizes the Swamp Fox Festival 5K Run/Walk sponsored by Farmers State Bank. The event begins at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7. The registration fee is $18 before Aug. 24, $20 before Sept. 1 and $25 up to the morning of the race. Registration forms, a course map and full details are available at www.crva.net/races/swamp-fox.

Parade

The Swamp Fox Festival Parade, sponsored by Linn Cooperative Oil Co. and Linn County REC, is a Marion tradition. The parade starts at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7 from the staging area in the Marion High School parking lot. It will move north on 15th Street, turn west on 7th Avenue, and continue to City Square Park. To register for the parade, call the Marion Parks & Recreation Department at 377-4846 or visit www.cityofmarion.org. Registrations must be submitted byWednesday, Aug. 21. The entry fee for political or business entries is $20; there is no fee for non-profit groups to participate. To relay the theme, parade entries can either be health/fitness or agriculture related.
