Linn County Receives Failing Grade for Particle Air Pollution

Gets an "A" for ozone-free air

The American Lung Association singled out Linn and four other Iowan counties for severe air quality concerns in the 2012 “State of the Air” study, according to a report by Radio Iowa

Linn County received an “F” for 24-hour particle pollution, which is a mix of any solid or liquid particles in the air.  

Particularly harmful particles come from mechanical processes like construction, demolition, mining operations and agriculture. Bacteria, pollen, mold, and plant and animal debris are also harmful.

Apart from the failing grade, Linn received an “A” for low ozone air. Ozone is understood to be the most widespread pollutant in the U.S. and the most dangerous.

The American Lung Association says that the following populations are at the greatest risk from particle pollution exposure:

  • Anyone with lung disease such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema;
  • Anyone with heart disease or diabetes;
  • Anyone over 65;
  • Infants, children and teens;
  • People with low incomes; and
  • People who work or are active outdoors.

Ways to protect yourself from ozone and particle pollution:

  • Pay attention to forecasts for high air pollution days to know when to take precautions;
  • Avoid exercising near high-traffic areas;
  • Avoid exercising outdoors when pollution levels are high, or substitute an activity that requires less exertion;
  • Do not let anyone smoke indoors and support measures to make all places smoke free;
  • Reduce the use of fireplaces and wood-burning stoves; and
  • Tell the President or your members of Congress to stand up for healthy air.
