Marion Patch: 5 Things for MLK Day

At the 26th Annual Remembering Martin Luncheon at the Kirkwood Hotel in Cedar Rapids, four students from the and the will be named Remembering Martin Student Honorees. The students are being singled out for their demonstration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's characteristics through their schoolwork, behavior and volunteer efforts. The event is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Beyond free admission to the museum, children can participate in free activities and everyone can watch a series of documentaries and enjoy free, light refreshments. Check out the website for the African American Museum of Iowa to get a preview of current exhibits.

As Part of the National Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, anyone can drop off canned goods and items for personal hygine to benefit US veterans at the from 2-6 p.m.

It's not too late to sign up to locally volunteer for the National Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. The local effort is from several different area-organizations: Coe College, Community Corrections Improvement Association, Mount Mercy University, Sixth Judicial District Department of Correctional Services, and United Way of East Central Iowa.
