News You Might Have Missed: Nov. 28-Dec. 4

There is no need for you to check the news like arms on a clock, but I do, so here are some highlights.

  • According to the Des Moines Register, a new study has shown that, in 2009, an average of 12.8 percent of Iowans were facing hunger issues. Worse yet, the researchers say that number very well might be growing.
  • The newest Des Moines Register Iowa Poll is out and it places Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich at the top, earning the support of 25 percent of "likely caucus goers."
  • The Occupy Iowa Alliance protested at a AirCover Integrated Solutions Corporation, a business in Cedar Rapids that will be making unmanned surveillance drones. The Cedar Rapids Gazette writes that officials from the business say the drones will be used for first response during emergency situations in addition to public safety uses.
  • Another piece by the Des Moines Register on the presidential race. According to their Iowa Poll, would-be Herman Cain voters are most likely to support Newt Gingrich in the upcoming caucus.
  • The New York Times wrote that Republican presidential candidates Mitt Romney, Rick Perry and Ron Paul have spent close to $1 million for television and radio ads in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina last weekend. I usually mute the commercials anyway.
  • The Chicago Tribune hosted an Associated Press story on heroin's resurgence in Iowa. Most alarming is the comeback in Cedar Rapids, where The Gazette has reported 22 people have died in Cedar Rapids from heroin overdoses in the last two years. More on this story later in the week.
  • In odd news, The Des Moines Register reported that Kalona, Iowa will be selling the rights to name an unnamed river currently referred to as "the crick" on eBay. No word on the opening bidding price.
