Do Hot Days Lead to More Burglaries in Iowa?

Marion Police spoke to KGAN and briefly delved into why the heat can lead to an increase in home burglaries.

Sgt. Phil Fort spoke to KGAN for a story yesterday on the department's concerted efforts to combat crime on the Fourth of July, but he let slip one interesting detail on how heat affects crime.

We've heard of the heat getting the blame for shorting our patience and quickening our temper, leading to increased amounts of fights or even murder, but how can it relate to burglaries?

It seems simple, really. Fort explains that when it's hot out, residents tend to leave a window or door open to ventilate their oven-like cars and homes, which apparently entices thieves.

"People have their windows open when it's warmer out and so they leave their cars unlocked at night with the windows down," Fort said to KGAN.
