Man Fleeing Marion Police Dies After Crashing into House on Country Club Drive

The resident inside the house on Country Club Drive was uninjured according to police.

A 30-year-old Marion man was killed this morning as a result of him crashing into a home following a short chase with the Marion Police Department.

According to a press release from the Marion Police, at 1:11 a.m. this morning officers attempted to stop Matthew Gates, 30, of Marion at the 2400 BLOCK of 10th Street for a traffic violation. Gates did not heed their calls to stop and a chase ensued, leading Gates to drive off the road, crashing into a residence at 1160 Country Club Drive.

Gates died at the scene of the accident, according to the release. There were no injuries reported to Marion Police officers or the sole resident of the home.

Marion Police were assisted at the scene of the accident by Linn County Sheriff's Deputies and the Marion Fire Department. Investigation into the incident continues.
