Sheriff's: Car Strikes Bike in No Passing Zone Seriously Injuring Rider

Cyclist Megan Poulette, 33, was flown to the hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries. Driver Michelle Hess, 26, of Mount Vernon, was cited for passing in a no passing zone.

A car struck a cyclist in a no passing zone, which landed the cyclist in the hospital with serious injuries and the driver with a ticket, according to authorities.

Michelle Hess, 26, of Mount Vernon, was driving a Ford Escape and attempted to a pass cyclist Megan Poulette, 33, of Mount Vernon, in a no passing zone, according to a news release from the Linn County Sheriff's Office.   

That's when the vehicle struck the cyclist, according to the news release. Authorities were called at about 7:33 a.m., today, July 8, to 1300 Block of W Mt Vernon Road.

Poulette, who was wearing a helmet, was flown to Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to Sheriff's. Deputies cited Hess for passing in a no passing zone.

Mount Vernon Fire Department, Lisbon-Mount Vernon Ambulance, the Lifeguard Helicopter, Linn County Rescue 57, and Linn County Deputies responded.
