$10 Million Marion Police Station Construction to Begin

Construction will begin on the new Marion Police station Oct. 25.

The City of Marion is going to break ground on the newly approved $10 million police station Oct. 25.

You can attend a ceremony for that day at 4 p.m. at the Marion Enterprise Center, at 6315 Highway 151, according to Marion's communications coordinator Amber Bissinger.

It's planned to be three times the size of the current building and will cost a total of . The station should be completed by the end of 2013.

Marion Police Chief Harry Daugherty previously told Marion Patch that the current station simply doesn't meet the department's needs.

"I have eight detectives all in a little cubicle. I have six sergeants in an office that is two desks," said Marion Police Chief Harry Daugherty. "I had to turn one of the garages into a evidence room."

But how is the city paying for it, you might ask?

Marion will be posting a bond issue next year to raise all the funds.

The city currently owns the land that the future station will sit on, but will lease that land to a trustee. The construction company will then use their funds for construction. That means that Marion will only pay for the building after the city approves the completed, fully constructed building.
