Don't Call Me A Lady!

Sen. Liz Mathis, D-Cedar Rapids, corrects Sen. Bill Dix on Iowa Senate Floor

The senator from Iowa may be a lady, but she preferred a different name on the Senate floor today, Wednesday, March 14.

Sen. Liz Mathis, D-Cedar Rapids, corrected Sen. Bill Dix, R-Shell Rock, when he asked for “the lady from Linn” county to yield to a question about a bill that deals with competitive bidding.

Mathis responded: “The senator from Linn, not the lady from Linn will yield.”

However, when Sen. Paul McKinley, R-Chariton, later referred to Mathis as “Lady,” this time Mathis did not object, most likely realizing that all the terms – man, woman and senator – are commonly used on the House and Senate floors.
