November 8 Election Voting Guide

With a heated mayoral race, a nationally watched state senate special election and three city council positions up for grabs, the Nov. 8 election should prove to be the most exciting in some time.

Senate District 18

Liz Mathis

Mathis is a former KCRG-TV anchor and currently works as chief information officer at Four Oaks, a child welfare and juvenile justice agency in Marion. She is the Democratic candidate and has received substantial funds from the Democratic Party of Iowa. Mathis has stated her support for the Iowa Supreme Court's 2009 ruling to strike down a same sex marriage ban.

Cindy Golding

Golding is a business owner and Linn County Republican Party co-chair. As the Republican candidate for the Iowa State Senate District 18 race, Golding has received much support and attention from state-wide and national news media as well. Jon Tack

Tack is the District 18 Constitution Party candidate. He hasn't recieved as much attention the other candidates have, but he has made his voice heard in a recent candidate debate.

Mayor

Allen Snooks Bouska

Bouska is the owner of the Marion Dairy Queen on Seventh Avenue. He has gained support through his stance against the current Seventh Avenue Project. Marion Patch with Bouska for an story that ran last week.

Nick Glew

Glew has served four years on the Marion City Council and has been a proponent of the Seventh Avenue Project. Marion Patch with Glew for an article that ran last week.

City Council At-Large

Paul Draper

Draper is a retired business owner in Marion and has stated his disagreements over the west end corridor plan. He has also mentioned an interest in building a new police station.

Dennis Frever

Frever is a Marion resident who is currently the chair of the Marion Arts Council, he has served on the advisory board and the publicity chair for the Swamp Fox Festival from 2010-2011. He has been a business owner, a freelance meteorologist for KGAN-TV and has worked for Rockwell Collins in the Graphic Services Department.

Vicki Hughes

Hughes has served on the Planning and Zoning Commission in addition to the Marion Civil Service Commission. She has also challenged many aspects of the 7th Avenue Reconstruction Project.

Ward 1

Kim Etzel

Etzel is a former Marion business owner in Marion, Marion Square Gardens, a coffee shop that closed down this year. She has been vocal in her support of the 7th Avenue Project.

Dwight A. Hogan 

Hogan is an insurance adjuster and former president of the Cedar Rapids Claims Association. He is running on a platform of "fiscal restraint" and transparency.

Ward 3

Cody Crawford

Crawford announced his candidacy last June. He is a Marion resident who has volunteered with the IMAGINE8 committee and the Marion Community Activation Network. He has served on the Marion Comprehensive Plan, Steering Commitree and the Marion Uptown Streetscape Committee.

George G. Ulferts

Ulferts, a 15 year Marion resident and Sara Lee and has been a union steward with the Teamsters for the last 10 years. He has previously stated opposition to the Seventh Avenue Project.
