President Obama is expected to focus on jobs and the economy, according to a PBS report.

White House press secretary Jay Carney made the case Monday that jobs and the economy, which public opinion polls show are the top concerns of most Americans, remain issues of primary importance to the Obama administration.

"It is simply a fact that while the inaugural address contained within it very powerful lines from the president about issues like comprehensive immigration reform or the need to address climate change or gun violence, all of those issues combined got less space, if you will, in the inaugural address than the economy and jobs. And that reflects the overall approach that the president takes," Carney told reporters at the White House.

There's also some local connections to the address. Our local congressman is bringing a special guest to the State of the Union speech, according to WHO.

Iowa congressman Bruce Braley is attending President Obama’s State of the Union Address Tuesday night, but he’s giving his guest ticket to former Arizona congresswoman Gabby Giffords.

She was shot in the head during a campaign event outside a supermarket in 2011. Six people died in the mass shooting.

And, a former Kirkwood Community College student will also be on hand.

Lee Maxwell, one of Kirkwood's Energy Production & Distribution Technogies students from last year, is attending Tuesday evening’s State of the Union address as a guest of President Obama. Maxwell was hired by ACCIONA last May and was flown out to Montana the following day to help assemble a 139 wind turbines on a wind farm. He needed no further training from ACCIONA, than what was provided by the college's Energy Production program.
