Linn-Mar City Council Achieves Lighted Signage Goal

Six years of planning and saving led to the purchase and installation of the digital marquee.

From the Linn-Mar Community School District

It’s a goal that took Linn-Mar High School’s student council over six years to achieve, but a brand new, state-of-the-art digital marquee sign is lighting up some excitement at LMHS.

The double sided, full color sign with electronic messaging center can be pre-programmed with thousands of images, fonts and colors to display Linn-Mar events and graphics. The new sign also includes built in time and temperature.

With a price tag of approximately $36,000, the student council had been researching, developing and saving for the high tech sign since the idea was conceived. But the project was shifted into high gear the past two years and recently installed in conjunction with the district’s summer parking lot construction. Total cost includes development, equipment, installation, electrical wiring and the monument style base to meet Marion City Code.

Superintendent Katie Mulholland, Ed.D., confirmed the digital marquee was purchased with money raised by the students and did not come out of the district’s general fund. “We’re very proud of the hard work and dedication shown by our high school Linn-Mar student leadership in raising the money for the digital sign,” said Mulholland. “And it’s a smart purchase by Linn-Mar’s student council because the electronic message center will benefit all the students as our student clubs, groups and sports teams will have a way to communicate information about their events.”

In fact, the easily updated sign is currently being programmed by Linn-Mar’s student council using a school computer. Ongoing messages will be the responsibility of the student council along with support from LMTV. It’s a fun but simple way for students and parents to see school announcements as they’re driving by the high school. And the sign is even more impressive at night when it’s lit up!
