Marion to Hold Annual Arts Festival

Exercise your creative cranial hemisphere on May 19th

“It’s about the art.” If you are an artist or an art consumer, make a pilgrimage to the 20th Annual Marion Arts Festival tomorrow, from 9am to 5pm in City Square Park. Admission is free. An expected crowd of 16,000 will walk amongst prolific painters, ceramacists and woodworkers, and then some will run in the new festival half marathon and 5K. Register here. Pop a squat on a pottery wheel with guest artists from The Ceramics Center in Cedar Rapids and create a part of a tile mural installation for Vernon Middle School for the annual participatory public art piece. Thirteen art students of promise from eight Iowa colleges and universities will have a chance to sell their work at the festival as part of the Emerging Artists Program. An army …

Linn County Receives Failing Grade for Particle Air Pollution

Gets an "A" for ozone-free air

The American Lung Association singled out Linn and four other Iowan counties for severe air quality concerns in the 2012 “State of the Air” study, according to a report by Radio Iowa.  Linn County received an “F” for 24-hour particle pollution, which is a mix of any solid or liquid particles in the air.   Particularly harmful particles come from mechanical processes like construction, demolition, mining operations and agriculture. Bacteria, pollen, mold, and plant and animal debris are also harmful.   Apart from the failing grade, Linn received an “A” for low ozone air.
