Wrestler McDonough Named Top Hawkeye Athlete

McDonough holds wrestling records at Linn-Mar High School.

National champion wrestler and Marion native Matt McDonough has been named the University of Iowa's top male athlete and is a candidate for the Big Ten athlete of the year. University of Iowa officials announced last week that McDonough and women's field hockey player Jessica Barnett, both juniors, were the school's top athletes this year. McDonough finished this year with a 36-1 record, including 12 pins, and an NCAA championship at 125 pounds. His .962 winning percentage is the fourth best in UI history. In high school, McDonough won three state championships while sporting a Linn-Mar singlet. He also set school records for most takedowns in a season and tied the school record for most pins in a season. His 151 career wins in high school…

Olympic Dreams End for Marion Super-Wrestler, at Least for Now

Marion native and Hawkeye wrestling star Matt McDonough did not survive last weekend’s U.S. Olympic Wrestling Trials.

With a record of 100-4 and two NCAA titles to his name, it seemed that Marion native Matt McDonough was destined for greatness in last weekend’s U.S. Olympic Wrestling Trials in Marion. However, things didn’t necessarily work out that way. Though McDonough won two matches, he lost in the quarterfinals (1-0, 5-0) to top-seed Nick Simmons. "I really hope my teammates were watching today," McDonough said to the Press Citizen. "…I didn’t get what I wanted and you know what, I’m going to go into that wrestling room and I’m going to train even harder because of that." To his credit, McDonough was competing against top wrestlers four years his senior. And according to the Daily Iowan, he wasn’t the only Hawkeye to not go all the way. Iowa City …

Marion Native Super-Wrestler Matt McDonough is Entering US Olympic Team Trials

According to a release from the University of Iowa, Marion native and Hawkeye Wrestler entering the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

Matt McDonough told the University of Iowa News Service that that he's dreamt of being an Olympic athlete all his life. The Marion native and UI junior is one step closer, as he just entered the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for wrestling. "When you're young and you have those dreams, they slowly become more reality and with each step I take," he said in a news release. "I am on a mission to do this, and I have to do whatever it takes to get there." All of this comes after the wrestler placed first in a NCAA title tournament last March, which is also his second NCAA title victory, the first of which he won when he was a freshman.
